- If you’re killed by a croc while travelling in the Northern Territory, for $10 the Territory Insurance Office (TIO) will pay your estate $50,000 if you’ve purchased its crocodile attack insurance.
Pros and cons: there are some conditions, including: you must die within 30 days of the attack, must not be acting on a dare or wager, nor attempting suicide, it must be in the Territory (or up to 3km out to sea) and you can’t be employed as a crocodile feeder, handler or farmer.
TIO admits it’s “... mostly purchased for its uniqueness and Territory flavour”. There hasn’t been a single payout to date.
Verdict: tourists may think it’s worth $10 to receive the certificate.
Alternatives: perhaps you could also consider tiger snake insurance if travelling in Victoria, shark attack cover for South Australia and maybe in NSW, insurance against funnel web spider bites.
If you’re truly concerned about death by croc attack, then life insurance will be a better option.
